Salam Sejahtera rakan-rakan Toasmaster..

Bangau oh bangau mengapa engkau kurus.. bagaimana aku tak kurus, perut aku sakit.. pernah dengar petikan lagu ini bukan.. Ia adalah lagu rakyat yang menceritkan perihal bangau yang saling menyalahkan orang lain.. Tersenyum panjang saya pagi ini mengingat kembali kepetahan pemidato Saudari Tharwah Kasim yang menceritakan perihal bangau dan pengalaman beliau..

Saya agak tertarik dengan istilah yang di berikan oleh beliau.. "Jangan membangaukan diri".. tergelak sakan saya.. walaupun ucapan beliau semalam sedikit melucukan, tetapi ada pesanan tersirat yang telah di sampaikan.. Ya, kenapa perlu kita menyalahkan orang lain, kenapa tidak diri sendiri..? Adakah kita sempurna seperti Malaikat dan para Anbia? Setiap individu di dunia ini mempunyai keistimewaan masing2.. Dah lumrah kejadian manusia, ada kelemahan dan kekuatan.. Yang penting, kita harus memperbaiki diri sendiri..

Kali pertama menjejak kaki di sana.. saya agak terkejut dengan keramahan Bentara Kim Chow mengalu-alukan kedatagan saya, saudara Fakhrul dan Badrul... Melihat gimik beliau yang bersahaja mengedalikan majlis dengan berkebaya biru bersanggul pula membuatkan saya terpegun.. Teringat pula Baba dan Nyoya di Melaka.. Dondang Sayang.. :> Tidak lupa kepada Presiden kelab pidato Dato' Dr Kaisan yang memberi semangat dan inspirasi kepada semua menggunakan Bahasa Melayu dengan betul.. Saya berasa seronok dan gembira..

Melihat kepada pertuturan bahasa Melayu saya, beberapa aspek perlu di perbaiki iaitu cara penyampaian dan penggunaan bahasa.. Rakan2 sekalian, jika anda ingin mengukur sejauh mana tahap penggunaan bahasa melayu anda, jom kita ke Kelab Pidato Kuala Lumpur..

A Fantasy World it was..

Hi everyone….

Ahhhh... Fantasy World... what a nice world... some fantasized to be a rich girl driving a luxury car and having a handsome husband.. While other imagine being a fish that can swim anywhere..

That was our yesterday meeting theme... the those were some of the guest fantasies that was EXPLICITELY (word of the day by the way) shared yesterday..

The journey through the Fantasy World was lead by the Toastmaster of the Evening (myself.. Siti Zuraidah @ Alice), who ‘transported’ everyone to their own Fantasy World and continue with the Table Topic Session by Badrul@Anakin …. It was a very interesting spread of table topics but also very challenging to the table topic speakers. How can you be better than... Mortimer “Mo” Folchart, the Silvertongue in Inkheart, Frodo Baggins from Lord of the Rings, Tarrant Hightopp from Alice and Wonderland, Hermione Granger from Harry Potter and Edmund Pevensie from Chronicles of Narnia.. Obviously Rahayu, Low, Siraj, Razif and Vaffa have explained why they are better.. Congratz Bad!

Not stopping there, the journey continued with the project speech session. All speakers had a good and very creative story that made us laugh and enjoy the evening meeting. We also had our guest speaker, Muhd Siraj who presented his speech no 2, a story of his own experience and that relates to what perfection is all about. Other than that, Who Move my Cheese (TM Rahayu), Che Mat (TM Razif) and from our best speaker yesterday, TM Low (My Missing Link)….it was very fun listening to the speeches and acting too...

We closed our meeting with an impressive and positive feedback from our invited General Evaluator (Ms.Suhana). Thank you so much Suhana.

Ok….enough of my story telling. Anyway, yesterday menu “Mee Goreng” was very nice... Low had two round of it.... hehehehe

KL Semi Annual Convention 2010 (UPDATED)

Dear readers,

The KL Convention 2010 has just concluded, and I'd say it was a good one. It was the first convention since the breakup of District 51, so numbers were expected to be halved. My expectation was also true, that the convention would "slightly" lose some glitter without the presence of the Medan, Surabaya and KK girls. Too bad also that this time, I was left to be the only UEM delegate, since DTM Rohijas didn't go (but no worries I can manage my own with the girls). But with a finalised attendance of 334 people, it was still a success of its own.

It was also a sweet convention to remember. Many friends still came from Penang and Johor. We had friends coming from the other side - District 87 Governor, DTM Ariff Azahari, Division I Governor ACS Risti Brophy and Immediate Past Division I Governor, ACG Johan Setiawan. The plenary sessions were good. The image consulting talk was a new breath of fresh air to the delegates. The welcome night did its part to liven up the convention even though I expected more. And the Gala Night was truly a grand night of award recognitions which was worth remembering (especially with my - and Shidi's, thanks bro - music collection being played!).

The best as they say, was definitely saved for the last. The D51 evaluation champion sprinkled glitter, literally, on stage when starting his evaluation. That's a cool gimmick. But the Humorous Speech, the D51 Humorous Speech Champion... spoke about FART! Now who would see that coming?

I always believe that words alone are not enough to describe Toastmasters conventions - you have to see it yourself. So now, the least I can do for you guys is to share some of my collection of photos during the weekend. Enjoy.

p/s I forgot to mention the highlight of the convention... the Test Speaker for the Evaluation Contest was Stephen Fernando!!! Judging by the thunderous cheer, he became champion only by appearing in cameo. Stuff of legend.

~ Area G2 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contests 2010 ~

Last night, as I did last year, I went to watch Mid Valley Toastmasters Club's Humorous Speech & Evaluation contests. I got there at 6.40pm and I thought I was the only one holding back my saliva while others were happily sipping their cup of tea when suddenly, I saw DTM Rohijas! He was there too. For the same reason as me I guess. Just to watch.

The reason I went there was actually to watch my good friend, Immediate Past AGW3 Loh Chia Hur putting up his show in the contests. The response from their contestants was super - they had 7 Humorous Speech contestants and 7 Evaluation contestants! My club only had 3 by 3, even then I was already shaking. Chia Hur's case is the same as mine. Making contests comeback after a 2-year technical hiatus (AG ma, cannot contest), going up against new talents, hoping to get one step further and go to Area.

In the end, he won both contests. Well done man, you can still speak. But what should not go unnoticed was how their club members were so eager to take part and improve themselves multiple-fold. I'm always a main advocator of joining contests. I think it's the real platform to test your true mark as a competent speaker. Giving speeches in club meetings is good practice. But taking part in contests, is the priceless "exam". You make it, and you "graduate" as a speech laureate.

Nevertheless what will never be forgotten - by me at least - is the "Hong Kong Dong" joke shared by a contestant. I'm going to share in our next club meeting, be it UEM Group or UEM Academy. Because seriously, it is - legen-dary....

Though the UEM Group Toastmasters Club did not manage to hold its club-level speech contests this season, it did not forgo its area-level contests. So on Monday, 9th August 2010, three members braved the massive Midvalley traffic to attend the Area W1 Humorous Speech and Speech Evaluation contests.

Bravo President Fadhlan, for diving head on into the humor pool. You survived and I am sure you have gained a lot of positive things (coming out of that pool). I will always remember your "potato chips".

Our Exco member and IPP JunJun did equally great. Asking the audience not to assume via the subject of sex ... You guys missed a lot for not going to the contest. Ha ha ...

I, on the other hand, will continue to be disliked by our Klang Valley judges for my brand of evaluation. Enough said ;-P

Installation

Somehow we always have our installations during office hours instead of in the evening over dinner (and dance) like so many other clubs out there. My guess is we wanted the other employees and senior management to grace the ceremony, and get into the mood together with us.

I heard the Group MD/CEO was supposed to be the VVIP for the recent installation (no offence En. Azman Sulaiman). I was so looking forward to listening to what he would say about Toastmasters. And how he would say it. Would he inspire us to take Toastmastering seriously? Would he challenge us to conquer District 51?

Let's have another installation ... ha ha ha.

Greetings fellow Toastmasters,

The first UEM Toastmasters meeting of the year couldn’t come soon enough. As fast as lightning, as quick as any furiously impatient party pooper, we started off the meeting with a very fitting theme – NEW YEAR PARTY! I was so glad to be back as TME after half a year.

The meeting started off with a different vibe. After CC Johan’s presidential speech, 3 minutes were allowed to “Blow Your Balloon”. The plan? Simple. Each person just had to blow their balloon and tie it up in 3 minutes. A very easy activity you could say but for inexplicable reasons, people still laughed. Just for blowing balloons.

Next, we had the Project Speeches:

1. Hishammuddin CCM#4 – Birth

Hishammuddin, our latest humour favourite delivered another tummy tickling speech when he spoke on, not his, but his wife’s experience of giving birth and the way he saw it. It doesn’t matter if I couldn’t remember all that he shared, as long as we all remember it was a “bloody thing” affair.

2. CC Junjun ACM#1 – Sleeping Beauty (The Folk Tale project from the Storytelling manual)

This is Junjun’s first attempt of her Advanced Manual! She recited the old story of Sleeping Beauty and delivered the story in her very own style. It got me wondering half way through. If I were to find a beauty who happens to be sleeping unexpectedly at, say, Mercu Level 20 at Group Finance, what should I do. Call admin?

Before we went for break, we had the Master of all Masters, ATMB "Uncle" Stephen Fernando to deliver his jokes during the Humour Session. He only talked about the facts of Indian movies, but still it was so funny!

After the break, before we started Table Topics, we had another special agenda – “Blow Your Whistle” for 1 minute. Usually when we go to speech contests, we have 1 minute of silence. This agenda was the reverse of that silence because we got to blow the party whistles and our lungs out for up to 1 full minute! This was also funny, because after only 35 seconds all of us were already panting and asked the timer, “Hey timer, time not yet up ah?”

Then we had the Table Topics session led by our Master, Chong Jin. Chong Jin gave an interesting series of interconnecting topics, so that when all the speakers spoke, they made up one single story. There were many version of speeches delivered too. They were funny, thought provoking, some raunchy and God knows what else.

1. CC Suhana – When asked on what is the best party you can have for New Year, she gave a really provoking answer. She said the best party is the party for singles only! Of course this shocked the fathers and mothers who were practically, the whole crowd. Nevertheless, she supported her argument very well and sharp.

2. ACB, ALB Chia Hur – He continued on what should be in the party. He said that for a singles only party, there should be… I can’t continue this, sorry. But I guess married people would understand the details. I am single and innocent so I have no clue.

3. Elias – He continued to agree with what both Suhana and Chia Hur mentioned. He managed to elaborate Chia Hur’s point, as he knows what married men know. I still was left blur.

4. Chong Jin – A surprise slot for the Master himself. His speech was a wrap up of what all the previous speakers have said. Despite all the provocations and raunchiness, he still could conjure up a decent summary and say that all the suggestions earlier could benefit the nation!

Right afterwards, the session was handed over to the GE, ACB, ALB Ernest Wong. He surely missed the club after a long absence and he was glad to be back! (Actually, he was there because I told him there was a party)

After some good 5 minutes of telling the club how much he missed us, he call upon the evaluators:

1. DTM Rohijas – He praised Hishammuddin for the “bloody” fantastic speech! Good choice of words with simple sentences. He offered valuable advice when he said that if Hishammuddin used more rhetorical devices, the speech would be more splendid and complete.

2. CC Suhana – Here’s an adult lady who expressed that now she has grown up, she expected to hear an unexpected twist to the story ending. Nevertheless, she enjoyed the enthusiastic delivery.

Then up came Uncle Stephen to deliver his Table Topics Evaluation. He was happy to see that all speakers were very comfortable to express themselves. He also shared his experience entering Table Topics contests up to District (!) level and said that this was a very good session to prepare the speakers for the coming contests.

Since there were only 2 project speeches and 2 evaluators, only the Best Table Topic Speaker was voted. And the winner is…

CC Suhana! Congratulations! It's her first award from the club on her first visit!

Everybody had a great party!

The meeting ended early at 9.00 pm. This was indeed a great meeting to open the year. It was full of excitement, fun, and laughter that everybody enjoyed it so much. My hope is that in future meetings, we will carry on to stimulate this *energy* we have so that UEM Toastmasters will always continue to be FUN!

Good things come around

Last night, I went to my other club meeting, Kelab Pidato KL. It was my first time as "Pengacara Mesyuarat". There was only one project speech and one evaulator, so I thought of giving a special prize to the Table Topics (yakni Ucapan Spontan) winner - a delicious Kitkat bar.

I planned my way so that the Kitkat would go to others. I took up the role as Table Topics Evaluator. However because the numbers were small, I had to take part. In the end, guess what...?

I won Best Table Topics speaker by one marginal vote so eventually my own Kitkat bar came back to me.

Moral of the story: Go back and visit your Toastmasters club meetings. Good things come around even when you least expect it.

Ayoyo ... one whole October went by without any post to this blog. And November is flashing by. So sad.

In the past one and a half months, I went to the semi-annual convention in Genting (Hadzrin was there too), judged the table topics session at the inaugural UEM Orators Debtors, err, Debate and attended meetings at MCOBA, Friendship, KL Advanced, AFC and Kelab Pidato Perdana. But I only attended UEM club meeting once (shame on me).

Tomorrow I will attend the Kelab Pidato Kuala Lumpur (KPKL) meeting. Want to come along?

Yes, my wish goes to the well respected Master in District 51. Last night I went to Speecom Toastmasters Club - they had a workshop on how to become a champion speaker by Stephen Fernando. To describe the workshop in the words of the Master himself - WOOWWW.....

Hence I wish to see us in uemTM to have a workshop of some sort too. Last year we had the Pronunciation Workshop. It was well received and we received plenty of positive feedback saying "Thank you now we feel we can speak like Orrangg Putih!"

So what's next? UEM Academy officers, any plans coming soon? Keep us posted alright.

Dear fellow Toastmasters,

Yesterday, Junjun and me had an opportunity to visit DHL Toastmasters Club located in 26th Floor, South Wings, Menara TM. We are pleased to have such a wonderful welcoming speech by the club President, Sukhdev, CC. Besides, our AG W5, Christine, ACB, CL was there too.. not to forget our energetic and jovial Assistant DG in Education Vincent, DTM was there to play a role as General Evaluator.

We started our meeting at 6.45pm with an invocation speech by Christine, ACB CL. She inspired us with her speech on the 'mouse trap' and the importance of teamwork spirit among each and every one of us...

The session started with the Table Topic Session led by Kok Swee Lim. Using the word motivate as a word of the day, her topic made all of us being forced to used word of the day to deliver impromptu speech. Job well done. We have Alaric, Banir, Kevin and Junjun participated in the session.

Personally, i felt that eventhough DHL TMC has just established in year 2006, the quality of speakers at that club are remarkable. Chances to win the area club contest are huge! C'mon guys/gurl... enter the contest for fun!! Let us all have fun in Area Contest which will be held on this coming 24th Aug 2009 at WIM.

Anyway, i did have chance to deliver my 1st ACM Interpreative Reading entitled 'The Race', written by Stephenie Meyer - continuation of Twilight Series.. It was really good to have an overwhelming response by the rest of the audience. I'm very honoured to have our Asst DG in Education, Vincent, DTM as my evaluator. Thanks Vincent!

Overall, it was a great pleasure to be there.. I really hope that my friends and i can come again to this remarkable club in future. Below are some of the pictures taken yesterday...

1. Use gestures and expression EXCESSIVELY

2. Identify where/when and how to throw your PUNCHLINE in your speech.

3. Use 'CLEAN JOKES'

4. Use your 'STONE FACE' when giving your jokes.

5. Use 3 lines or less than 25 words for HUMOUR during opening and closing of your speech.

We had a wonderful and joyful meeting yesterday. With the theme ' A Tribute To Warrior', our TME, Mazlan, CC did a very well done jobs when mentioning all the names of our warriors such as Dato' Bahaman, Dato' Maharajalela who fought for our country!

We started our meeting by our President's keynote address. He made an unexpected announcement that....there will be NO MORE SEPARATE meetings for both clubs. Hoorayyy!! Clap..Clap.. Clap.. Thus, there will only be a JOINT-MEETING instead. The organizer will definitely alternate by both clubs. - Love it!! UNITED WE STAND...

TABLE TOPIC SESSION

Then, the meeting continued with the Table Topic Session handled by our President himself. He really energized us to take part in the session in order for us to improve our spontaneous skills.

TTS #1 - Hadzrin, ACB,CL a.k.a our MJ in da' house
Question : Benefits of National Service to our youth.

He shared with us the benefits of National Service for youth. He pointed out clearly on the awareness of nationalism, one of the platforms to bring our youth together besides, they volunteer doing good things. To attract more youth to participate in that program, the involvement of young artist such as Alif and Diana Danialle attract the attention! Finally, it builds the relationship bonding among them.. As usual, his aura kept us to listen to him dearly... wow!

TTS #2 - Janah a.k.a cheerful lady among us...
Question : If you have to choose to work in Military, which one would you choose between Army, Navy and Air Force?

Since she loves travelling so much, she will choose to be an air-force crew. To be exact- a pilot. She also shared with us about her friend, a woman who was the 1st Batch jet-fighter pilot who also involved in bringing the ministers for overseas visit. It was a good speech indeed Janah! I love the way you bring up the spirit among us especially when you talked about 'woman' spirit! :)

TTS #3 - Liza a.k.a the most 'sensation' gurl in town!
Question : People said 'Pen is sharper than the sword'. What do you think?

She started a little bit slow, but when she 'awake', we can't stop her from talking.. She shared with us how the power of the author who can change the mindset of people by only reading the articles. By writing (as a pen) they can reach out to those people across the country especially in rural area. They also helped people to shape their thought,mind and their character with the word from the pen! It was superb sis! Full of wisdom.. I like it very much.. :)

TTS #4 - Helmi a.k.a the most 'cute' girls in da' house...
Question : We know the contribution of the soldiers to our country. What about the contributions from our atletes to our country?

She gave us the explanation on how the atlete can contribute by giving a good name and raise our country image especially in sports arena whenever they gave their best performance! Cayalah sis.. u can do it very well this time.. Keep up the good effort!

PROJECT SPEECHES:

Looi Khen Yu, PS #6 Laughter The Best Medication

He appeared very confident this time and well-prepared speeches. He shared with us on how laughter can increase the level of endorphines in our body thus gave us a healthy life-style. His speech had lots of facts, and the most important part is, he remember it all. You inspired us Looi, looking forward for your next speech!!!

Norizal Faisal, PS #7 Bowling

He was calm as usual, together with his bowling ball and new bowling shoes. He shared with us on the history of bowling and demonstrate us how to hold the bowling ball. He also mentioned on the selection of ball weight should not be more than 10% of our body weight. The most unforgettable moment during his speech for me was when he showed the slide .. jeng jeng jeng
"LET'S BOWL and STRIKE GIRLS".. To all the bowlers out there, please take note! :P

Nor Hashimah PS#9 Volunteering

Once she stood in front of us, she started with the superb question 'Do you still remember the Tsunami Tragedy happened in 2004?'. It was really an attention grabber to all of us. She then continued giving examples on what she did, the volunteer agency such as Mercy, Yayasan Salam and so forth went out volunteering themselves in helping the people in Acheh. She also shared with us on her experience on collecting the used cloth, groceries and etc volunteerily as a token of her noble cause towards the events. Her speech was ful of sincerity when we can see sparkling eyes of her telling us the benefits of volunteering. Personally, i think she did a very good job when all of us influenced by her speech to volunteer ourselves i future. Congrate sis! I'm looking forward for your 10th Speech!

Johan Saleimi ACM#1 (Special Occasion Speeches) A Toast to the True Leader

Johan showed us on how do we should deliver a speech in the occasion to appreciate someone. He was using his ability to praise with some excellent choice of flowery words such as 'If you are a bird, you'll be the one who leads the flock of birds', 'If you are a star, you'll be the north-star who leads the way for the ships' and 'If you are the sea, you are the one who produce the melody sounds of the waves'. Guess what, he dedicated the speech to our IPP, Hadzrin, ACB,CL a.k.a his evaluator.. Ha ha ha.. Frankly, eventhough i'm not Hadzrin, i' touched and mesmerised of his words! Cayalah our 'Mat Bunga' :P

PRESIDENTIAL END SPEECH

The meeting then continued with our President closing speech. There are several announcement made by him which have been laid as below:

1. There will be NO MORE SEPARATE MEETING, thus starting from this pont of time only JOINT MEETING applies to all.

2. Starting this term, there will be new approach applies to all which are:

- For scheduled speakers who are scheduled to deliver speech for example on 3rd week of the month, they have to attend and play roles on the 1st week or 4th week of previous month to secure their slots.

- If they fail to do so, their slots will be given to those who attends the meeting earlier and will be put in the waiting list.

- Reminder to those who can't attend or missed their slots, they will also be put in the waiting list util they fulfill the requirements.

Initially, 4 speakers have confirmed to deliver their speeches. Unfortunately, the one and only available is our sister K. Marzi delivering her speech #9 entitled : Forgiveness!!

Personally, congrates sis for the excellent delivery of the speech, yet for some of us to ponder on is it worth it for us to forgive members who lacks of commitment? Only you can decide.. :)

TABLE TOPIC SESSIONS

Let me share with you the background story for this session which will enlighten all of you on the powerful word- ‘unity’. As per schedule, CC Mazlan is suppose to be our Table Topic Master on that day. However, due to a very important meeting he has to attend, thus he can’t make it on time. He informed all of us (Johan, Survinne and me) on his late arrival.

Without being discussed among all of us, before the meeting started, 3 of us have come up with different question of table topic. Despite having 5 topics, we end up having 15 topics instead.

All of these changes inspired me to write something for us to highlight in relation of ‘UNITE’, definitely we are ‘UNITED’!! Our beloved President, CC Johan is very happy to be our TTM, mostly because he has 15 interesting topics to test all the audience.

Those our bravesouls are:

CC Pramila Kaur a.k.a Prem shared with us on her experience not to donate blood due to her health conditions. Same goes to her brother a.k.a Amitabh Bachchan having the difficulty to face the blood on himself. His face will becoming pale since he can’t stand blood at all. Her speech make all of us laugh out loud!! Thanks Prem, u make our day happier ever after.. hahaha

Farquar Haqqani – our ‘future’ leaders of Khazanah shared with us his experience especially related to unity. He was former debater in his college, KYUEM and he shared with us on the how proud he felt to be a Malaysian, mostly when he spoke about his beloved KYUEM, a centre consist of brilliant multiracial people in the country. His best buddy not only limited to Malays but also Chinese, Sikh, Indian, Caucasian and so forth. Good to have you Haqqa!! Don’t forget all of us when you are at the top..one fine day.. :P

CC Khairil Liza a.k.a ‘Sensation’ gurl in town – talked about Malaysian Flag. She felt very proud to be Malaysian especially during Hari Raya time when she was celebrating it at Manchester during her study overseas. The touching part was when our flag have been stood up together with US Flag. This was the memorable moment when she claimed to her friend that both of our countries (US and Malaysia) have the same flag colour code. The minor different was only on the star and crescent which US don’t have. We are proud too sis!!

CC Azlina Mohd Yusof a.k.a Cutest gurl among all of us shared with us on her experience with her children and some useful tips for the parents out there! Don’t ever stop your children to play, let them play since tat is the only things on earth they can do as a children. Besides playing, they also learn to use their motor skills, their creative thinking skills and so forth.. You really inspired us bebs!!

Cik Azizahwati a.k.a an elegant lady among all of us or our future Toastmasters member . It was her first time delivering spontaneous speech but yet so confident in delivering her thought on National Monument. Eventhough she’s never been to the place before, but she did explain to us how she see the photo from her own perspective! Beautiful indeed Sis! You did very well.. Bravo.. see you in the next meeting….

EVALUATION

ACB,CL Christine Khoo a.k.a our dedicated Area Governor W5, 2nd appearance to our Club Meeting shared with us on Marziana excellent speech. There are a few improvement which she did highlighted to Marziana and she’s looking forward to her 10th speech!

CC Shiham a.k.a me, myself shared with all the audience on the lack of commitments especially on the speakers who can’t make it to deliver speech. Overall, all seems good and can be improved further.

The Last Presidential Note for 2008/2009

Today is my last day as President!

I have to say it is a funny feeling. After exactly one year being in this hot seat, I never imagined that all in a Toastmasters’ season would happen so quickly. It only felt like yesterday when I called Hedzri – whom I still hold in high regards as my honourable IPP – to ask on club educational plans and membership issues. It only felt like it was just the other day that I listened to another inspiring speech by our faithful old guard, Tan Kah Yong!

When I first took up the club presidency, I took it with my highest pride, knowing that I’ll be leading a club so rich in history. Then the real challenge came to surface. At the beginning of the term, almost all members were new and their understanding of Toastmasters was near to zero. Thus, members had to be educated on the significance of the Distinguished Club Program and why achieving its goals will be regarded in the highest delight in the Toastmasters fraternity. It was important especially if we were to retain our President’s Distinguished Club standing!

I discovered that members’ confidence was a major area of concern. All new members would have second thoughts to do a project speech, let alone Table Topics. The same club officers had to play meeting roles over and over, especially that of TME. Members had the impression that Toastmasters is “only for those with good English”. Hence, they mainly viewed Toastmasters as the gold-plated platform for the talented, and not in its original purpose as a platform to learn and grow.

This was the perception that needed to be overhauled. Together with my loyal officers, we began to embark on a phase of change. Members were individually supported to do their project speeches with the assurance that as long as they prepare, they would never fail. Role players were rotated among all club members. Slowly but gradually, my club officers and I took pains to convince members to embrace the culture of Toastmasters that everything we do is only intended to help ourselves improve. In doing so, we took the learning process to our hearts even closer.

Then the “clubbing” notion began to enter the UEM Toastmasters vocabulary. All members were, and still are, encouraged to visit outside clubs to witness Toastmasters in a wider perspective. This was the turning point that changed the members’ view. Amazed by the enthusiasm of outside club speakers, they gleefully returned to our home clubs with one vision in mind – to exponentially raise the competency level of our speakers and to upgrade our own UEM clubs’ standards even better!

After one whole year of tussling and toiling as well as enjoying and partying (yeah..), we have worthily raised the bar to another level. Today as we approach the very end of the term, I can now say it with pride that I couldn’t feel more prouder to have been a UEM Toastmasters club president during this excellent term of 2008-2009!

Therefore fellow Toastmasters and incoming officers, let us all continue our neverending hardwork and tireless efforts into the new term. Let us all set our sights high to keep aiming for the sky, to reach the pinnacle where we truly belong.

It has been my ultimate pleasure to serve you during this wonderful term. Thank you to all of you wonderful people.

The Last Meeting Report for Term 2008/09

Time flies. It has come to the end of the term and this would be the last meeting report for the term 2008/09.

The very special last meeting theme is "Subject-Verb Agreement". In this meeting, we have to be mindful to speak in the correct english grammar and pronunciation. The word of the day was also somewhat a unique word, "conjugate" which means join together. ACB, CL Hadzrin took up the role as the TME for this last meeting and he has hand picked CC Ridzuan to be his SAA again! The combination just like what we used to have during the starting of the term last year...

This meeting was also graced by the Past Division W Governor, DTM Azmi Shahrin. He has given us a lecture on the Subject-Verb Agreement, which we found it very useful as it served as an English grammar revision for all of us. The lecture reminded us of our old school English class... :)

Table Topics Session

This time, we had our first time Table Topics Master CC Liza to provide the challenge to our brave souls. The speakers were asked to use the correct subject verb agreement when delivering their topics. Some of the topics were challenging especially with the presence of our English teacher, DTM Azmi staring at the speakers which made it more challenging. However, TM Faisal, TM Hishammudin, CC Shiham and TM Janah managed to perform and give their best!... while trying to use the word of the day in their story that entertained us very much.

Project Speeches Session

CCM#1 Lim Chong Jin - "PPP"

The area W3 table topic champion has finally done his ice breaker, in a spontaneous way. The "PPP" here is not referring to the People's Parti Progressive in Sabah, but it's about TM Chong Jin's born place, Penang and his passion. He spoke with energy, body language and he definitely spoke like a seasoned speaker.

CCM#4 Looi Khen Yu - "Internet"

TM Looi has chosen a topic that was relevant to everyone in our daily life, the Internet! He has given us some statistics on the most browsed website and everyone was so interested about it. A very informative speech indeed.

CCM #8 Marziana - "The Last Lecture"

This was also the book review session where TM Marziana shared with us about the book The Last Lecture. She has extracted the important points and displayed them by using power point slides. It was not only informative but also an inspiring speech!

Evaluation Session

The GE, DTM Azmi took over the floor and he has reminded the evaluators to emphasize more on recommendations and to keep the praising part to 30%. We had the following evaluators:

This session was full of laughters as the evaluators were asked by the GE to speak with ENERGY! It was so funny especially when Faisal was trying to speak with energy. You could only feel it if you were there... Great session...

Even though the meeting ended after 10pm, but everyone was having a fun time and enjoyed the meeting.

Humour Master Session:

CTM, CL NJ Singam shared with us one of the humorous collections he had with us. The humour of the Light Green and the Dark Green’s people really gave us a great time that day…

Table Topic Session:

TM Muhammad Ridzuan Mansor prepared with choices of topics related to the Mother’s Day to test the Toastmasterians…The challenge were took up by TM Jannah, TM Hisyam, TM Shiham, and TM Hafiizh. It was such the most emotional table topic I ever had attended. Good choice of topic, bro!

Report of AGM Term 2008/2009

Succession planning is very important in continuing the sustainability and growth of an organisation. The same applies to Toastmasters club as well.

Time flies. We are now nearly the end of the term 2008/2009 and soon, it will be the time to pass the baton to the next line of leaders for both UEM Group & UEM Academy Toastmasters Club. The AGM was then fixed on the 29 Apr 09.

The meeting started with the President's opening speeches by President Hadzrin for UEMA TMC and VPE Johan for UEM Group TMC (as President Zakiah is on confinement leave now). Both clubs presented their respective reports on DCP, activities conducted for the term as well as the Treasurer's report.

Next on the agenda is the highlight of the AGM, the election for Exco 2009/2010. The nominating chairman was none other than the Area W2 Governor-elect, ACB, CL Hadzrin and assisted by his committees, Secretary - Yau, Timer - Survinne and SAA - Shiham.

The best part here is that if there are more than 2 nominees for a post, each of the nominee was given 2 minutes to convince the voters why should we vote for him/her. Finally, after rounds of campaign speeches, the votes were casted and the new lineup of Exco 2009/2010 is selected!

In the words of her evaluator CTM David Buxton (yes our PP came back!), Helmi had the unique mixture of being serious and humorous at the same time in her speech. She might be nervous, but her poker-faced jokes really entertained the crowd!

2. Janah - CCM#1 "Simply Janah"

Yes, another Ice Breaker which was just as entertaining. Janah took us thru a series of her personal endeavours, from her favourite likings to her "pontianak fantasies"? No, don't get the wrong idea, it was a one-of-a-kind speech told in her own way. In her own words, it was simply Janah.

3. Siti Zakiah - CCM#6 "Gaza"

Zakiah deliver a powerful impactful speech on the events happening in Gaza. Wow... from her manner of speech, she was deeply engrossed into her subject indeed. Her trademark poker-face was still there, but for her sharings and pleas, the audience could really feel her message.

4. Yau - CCM#10 "Living or Surviving?"

Yes fellow Toastmasters.. it is the BOMB from the lady herself! THE 10th SPEECH!
Yau shared with us the story of her optimistic friend who believed that anything is possible and that you should pursue what YOU want to do, rather than just obey to the routines you have to do. A truly inspiring speech, Yau has shed light on the true meaning of life. With that, she has deservingly earned the title of Competent Communicator

Table Topics

In line with the theme, the Table Topics Master (me) gave a set of topics which put the speakers "into the shoes of Benjamin Button". What do you do when you are getting older but look younger? Interesting mind-boggling thought-provoking nature-challenging topics indeed but in general, the crowd was confused. Because they haven't watched the movie yet. Nevertheless, credits to the TTM for trying :P

One could think that after HELP UC TMC's clean sweep of the recent Area W2 International Speech & Table Topics Contests, they are unstoppable. Strangely enough, not in their own backyard - or rather - basement though.

In their recent club meeting on Saturday 7 March 2009, Yau has won the Best Assignment Speaker award and I bagged the Best Table Topics Speaker award!

Seems like the future for UEM Academy is bright after all...

UEM Academy & Exact ADC1 TMC Joint Meeting Report

There have been a few talks on having joint meeting with other clubs and this time it has come to reality! We finally managed to organize a Joint Meeting with Exact ADC1 on 22 Dec 2008, to note a great ending for UEMA Toastmaster Club in year 2008.

The meeting was held at the million dollar view venue, none other than the 42nd Floor, KLCC! To mark the special event, the theme of this meeting was - Late Show @ KLCC: Christmas Special. Other than the members of both clubs, the meeting was also shined by a few special guests that joined us i.e. DTM Azmi Shahrin, Area W2 Governor CC, CL Ernest Wong, Ernst & Young TMC President ACS, CL Rengan as well as guests from HELP University College TMC. It was our pleasure to have all of you with us!

The unique part of this meeting was that, the co-host would hold the card board with words like "applause", "laugh", "aww..." etc. for the audience to follow and act... such a creative idea!!

Of course the show wouldn't be complete without the speakers!

Everyone had an enjoyable and great Toastmasters night and guessed it's time to go home?... No no no... we had another surprise...

Surprise birthday celebration for our dearest AG Ernest! It was his 24th birthday! The cake was yummy... Mmm...

All in all, it was a successful Joint Meeting between UEM Academy and Exact ADC1. We had learned from each other and the most important thing is, we have bonded both clubs much closer! Great job everyone who was involved in this meeting... and looking forward for the next joint meeting!

You have all contributed to the very intention of the club which is to develop better speakers and effective communicators.

New year, new meeting venues

Last week the clubs (two right?) met in Gurun ... well, in Gurun Room in Persada PLUS (is that the right name for the building?)

Next week the clubs will be meeting with the Supremes in Mercu UEM (that is the right name for the building). Oh silap, not with the Supremes; in the Supreme Room.

Enjoy!

But the meeting in Gurun lacked members as a desert lacks moisture. By the time I arrived (very, very late) there were only five or six Toastmasters and a guest in the room. Either the others left early or never showed up.

But for those who were there, you moved the clubs yet another step forward into the new year.

Unfortunately I can't make it to the meeting next week; ada training sampai malam.

Presidential Note #1

Dear Fellow Toastmasters,

This is the first time I’m writing for the blog a note of this kind.

Please allow me to proudly declare that last night’s meeting (5 Nov 08) at Pharmaniaga was a success! This is just the beginning of many more company visits that we plan to do in Toastmasters. For years, we have been pulling, tugging and persuading our friends to come to that meeting room in that Level 18, and pleaded with them to just enjoy the show and simply breathe. Now, we are bringing the meeting to them. Pharmaniaga is just the start, and we have also identified new vibrant locations like the MAVTRAC office, the new PLUS building and of course, a revisit to UEM Academy!

I have seen that there are many people in the UEM Group who have genuine interest in Toastmasters and that they really want to join the club! Thus I urge upon all of you to spread the word of Toastmasters to your friends, just like how we are spreading the meetings to them. Share with them the benefit of Toastmasters, tell them what you have learnt and gained from the club. Let’s bring in the numbers, spice up the excitement, enhance the quality and drive UEM Toastmasters to the pinnacle where it’s meant to be.

The future seems bright. With perseverance and hard work, let us keep moving in the right direction and God willing, we will see the light!

Deepavali: Festival of Lights Report

The meeting held on 29th Oct 2008 started at 6.45pm sharply.

In the month of October that is filled with celebrations, the theme of the meeting was thus "Deepavali: Festival of Lights" to share the happiness of all our Hindus friends! The word of the day was "incandescent".

Project Speeches:
1. TM Marziana: Speech #4 - A Lesson
TM Marziana has taught us a very good lesson. By telling us about one of her bad day, she managed to bring out the message of "Ignorance", a thing that all of us should ponder about. Good message behind the speech!

2. TM Idzhan: Speech #4 - Special Raya
TM Idzhan, the soon-to-be groom has shared with us his "findings" of the special moments and extraordinary things that happened during the recent raya. I wondered whether some maybe due to the pre-wedding symptoms? Hmm...

3. TM Ridzuan Speech #5 - Que...
TM Ridzuan has told us his story about "Queue". Of course, it was not only "told", but he has made use of the appropriate body gesture to enhance his speech. Obviously, everyone enjoyed his story.

4. TM Survinne Speech #6 - Togetherness
TM Survinne managed to capture the audience attention by telling us a very sad story of an about to broken marriage. She has utilized the vocal variety and she has stunned the audience. Great job!

Table topics:
It was the highlight of the day when CC Hadzrin conducted the table topic session with an Indian accent. He was not only testing on the speakers impromptu speaking skill but also their listening skill! The brave souls that took up the challenges were TM Idzhan, TM Chong Jin, TM Ridzuan and TM Zakiah. The session went well and a great round of applause for the TTM and speakers!

Evaluation:
We were very honoured to have the special guest, Asst Div W Governor, Education and Training, DTM Soh Fong Wai to be our General Evaluator. Thanks for the comments and suggestions! We have taken note and will strive to improve our future meeting.

Lastly, the moments that all has been waiting for... the presentation of awards. The awards go to.. (drum roll please....)

Selamat Hari Raya! UEM Toastmasters is always in the mood for just about any festive season and this time around, it's Raya. With the Word of the Day "rejoice", there's no reason not to rejoice in the Raya mood!

As always with UEM Toastmasters, we started off with the project speeches. The house was well-equipped with 4 "star-studded" speakers.

1. TM Farzi Shah, project speech #4: Miscommunication vs Disagreement

TM Shah gave an interesting speech on how miscommunication is common in the workplace but detrimentally, could result in a huge disagreement over the year end PMS ratings. The TME later wondered whether he was speaking from "personal experience", but I'm sure Shah was just giving a reality check to some extent. Miscommunication. Disagreement. Big words. Big no-no. Yet a very well delivered speech.

2. TM Yau, project speech #5: Standing at 4095

Presenting with such a catchy title, TM Yau was telling her chronicles (and the chronic events that come with it) of climbing Mt Kinabalu, sometime not so long ago. Her actions were smooth, her groove's got style. Yau's performance really left a picture perfect story to cherish.

3. CC, CL Ernest Wong, ACM#2 (The Entertaining Speaker): To Poke Or Not To Poke

Ah, who is it we have here? It's none other than the Area W2 Governor! But who allowed him a slot here? Must be some sloppy President's doing. Nevertheless Ernest gave an almost flawless performance! A vibrant story on "acne management", he left the audience with a point to ponder and endless laughter.

4. CC Mohd Hadzrin Shah, ACM#1 (Persuasive Speaker): Squeeze Cat

Talking about some sloppy President. This is me talking about me so how do I rate myself? I attempted to become an effective salesperson via some role playing - with the TME! I tried to sell a retail product to him which I affectionately called, Squeeze Cat. I did alright I suppose, and my evaluator CC Tan gave constructive remarks which were spot on. "You could've displayed your products..." "Maybe the questions you asked were too personal..." "Always remember to thank your customer..." were among his wise words. Very well said.

Yeah I did alright. Thanks Tan for the evaluation. But for my perseverance of trying to sell the goods which my uncooperative but still-as-cool buyer vehemently rejected, he did say he liked my effort!

Up next, after the usual over-extended dinner break, was the table topics session. TM Survinne, who may not celebrate Raya at home but loves the spirit of it, gave some refreshing topics to challenge the minds of the speakers. TM Ridzuan, TM Marziana, TM Hisam and of course the TME, TM Fairuz took up the challenge. They all tumbled and toiled and in the end, managed to survive the gruelling session of table topics. Hey wait, it wasn't gruelling really. They actually enjoyed every minute!

Finally, the moment of truth (not the workshop), the awards presentation. Are you ready for surprises...?

Area W2 Humorous Speech & Evaluation Contest 2008 Report

It was the battle between 5 clubs in Area W2.

It was a rainy day. It started drizzling since morning. However, it could not and would not stop the Toastmasters spirit. Our very own UEM Academy TMC representative, Hadzrin was all ready for the challenge.

The Humorous Contest started at 2.35pm. After the opening address and explanation on rules by the contest chair, it’s time for the contestants to blow the stage. One by one, every contestant had given their best and the theaterette was filled with laughter.

Hadzrin was the 4th contestant. Instead of presenting his previous club contest speech, “Don’t Judge a Player by His Ladies”, he has prepared a new speech titled “Twinkle Star”. It was a speech that is filled with drama, suspense and the most important thing, he made us laugh.

The next session was the Evaluation Contest. The test speaker delivered a speech on communication and the evaluators went all out to give their evaluations. Again, it was a stiff competition among all the contestants.

Finally, it was the moment that everyone was waiting for, the announcement of final results. The hall went ecstatic when the contest chair announced that Hadzrin emerged as the Champion for Humorous Speech Contest and 2nd runner-up for the Evaluation Contest!

TM Looi started off with his speech entitled 'How To Be Happy'. All of us really enjoyed listening to his speech. Congrates Looi, you definitely made our day filled with happiness. Good Job! Looking forward to listen for your 3rd speech.

#4 TM Shiham : Baby Cries and Chuckles

TM Shiham went all out this time. She shared with us the story of her experience handled her 7 month year old daughter, Safrina.

At one point, her speech had been questioned by TM Ben- the first 'Point Of Information'. She did well in answering his question. Good speech indeed! Looking forward for your 5th speech.

#6 TM Hadzrin a.k.a Ben : Operation JT - Resynthesized

TM Ben with his sequel speech of the Operation JT. The continuity of the story of three lads.

The 2nd Point of Information' was raised by TM Shiham on why JT were being called King of Pop. He did very well in explaining why.. Excellent work Ben!

Humour Master Session

Our TME shared us his joke about Nasruddin who being so optimistic on everything. The story was really made all of us laughed. Well done Hedzri!

TM Hadzrin again shared his joke about husband and wife relationship.. An excellent joke indeed!

Table Topic Session

To matched the theme, TM Yau prepared a very interesting debating session entitled

" Toastmaster Meeting should be conducted during office hours".

Goverment team comprises TM Fairuz and TM Fazliana, both acting as staffs who agree on the statement.

Opposition team comprises CC Tan Kah Yong and TM Shiham, acting as a management who disagree on the statement.

When the night falls, the sounds of 'bats' scattering the place...arrghhh..

the calling of The Dark Knight was heard from the secret room

at level 18, Tower 2 started 6.50pm sharp!..

The Dark Knight theme and the word of the day ENIGMA suits well last night...

All came IN BLACK, but not ALL BLACK though..hahah..

TM Hisam with his speech entitled 'Batu Laut'
give an excellent introduction of himself and
connected well with his kampung situated in

Batu Laut; a remark of 'Javanese' Hero the making.

TM Mazlan on his speech 'From the Wheelbarrow to the Pan' impressed us on the story when he was small. He talked about the beta kerotene in cooking oil from the oil palm trees, which free from saturated oil. He also shared with us the experience playing the 'shadow movie' with his brothers. Well done Lan, looking forward for your #2 speech.

TM Norizal Faisal with his speech 'Myself'.

He shared with us his experiment by series of

so called 'bleeding episodes' in his life.

1st episode involved with his friend Nabil

('sound familiar', ;P), with the 'helicopter' scene.

The 2nd episodes was the 'chopping guava' scene.

TM Marziana with her inspired speech 'The Right Choice?'.

She delivered her speech in a magnificient way, unintentionally in 2 dimensions as per remark by her evaluator - En. Rohijas. She talked about how she dealt with certain circumstances which requires her to make choices; and not to forget her sequel stories about Miqael. Good work sis! Waiting for your 3rd speech

TM Idzhan with his speech 'Highlights of The day'. He shared with us his experienced met the look alike Dato' Seri Khir Toyo, and the one that attracted us are the incident he met with celebrities - Erra and his hubby Engku Imran. A good story telling indeed!! Well Done bro!! Looking forward for your next speech...

TABLE TOPIC SESSION

To match with the theme, our TTM : TM Shiham prepared the 'mystery yet puzzle' to challenge the 4 brave souls' impromptu speech of the day.. The speakers have to choose 4 selection of characters in Batman Series;

1st speaker (picture of Poison Ivy and Catwomen) - Vaani with her 1st attempt briefly explained to us what she knew about both characters. Happy to say that she managed to do it! Good work Vaani !!

2nd speaker (picture of Batman and Joker) - ACB, CL Hedzri puzzled us with his story about the psychic wearing his pants outside which is Batman and psychic who wanted to terrorise and making riots in the world, Joker. Salute bro!

3rd speaker (picture of Penguin and Mr Freeze)- TM Hadzrin mesmerised us with his speech about the history of penguin who raised up by a group of penguins and his idol Arnold played the role of Mr Freeze in the Batman movie. Bravo Ben!!

4th speaker (picture of Robin and Riddler) - CC Nabil shared with us the moment of truth on the story of Robin who actually killed the Riddler and Batman do nothing! Congrates Nabil! U made some of us really believed to your story eventhough it was a 'brilliant lie'!! Hahaha

'Wimbledon Results' Report

Greetings fellow Toastmasters!
Here is the report for the previous meeting held yesterday on the 9th July 2008.

The meeting started at 7.00pm. The theme of the day was "Wimbledon - Tribute To A Hero" and everyone could feel the fever, of course with all the all white a.k.a tennis player ! The word of the day was "Ace" which was suitable indeed for the day.

1. TM Azlina - #1 - My Life
TM Azlina just coming back from her confinement did very well in delivering her 1st speech. Congrates Azlina, we are looking forward for her 2nd speech!

2. TM Survinne - #2 Handphone

TM Survinne a.k.a Junjun excellently deliver her 'exuberant' speech with all her acts! Potential to be the best actress in future huh... ;p

3. TM Johan - #3 Even Federer Need Training

TM Johan acted as a tennis coach delivered his speech on the different types of tennis court available on this planet. He also talked about the effect of different stroke made by tennis player on the surface of the court.

4. TM Shiham - #3 Blood Diet ~ A Tribute to Rafael Nadal ~

TM Shiham played a role as a Naturopathic Doctor. As a tribute to the champs, she mainly focus to Blood Diet for Type A. She talked about types of examples of food categorized acted as medicine, food and poison. So, fellow type As .. take note "Not to add parmesan cheese when you eat Pizza Hut!"

5. TM Hadzrin - #5 Operation JT

Our beloved, newly elected President, TM Hadzrin did an excellent speech on how the operation to produce the so called Justin Timberlake (JT). He told about the story of three lads went to 'Dance' Class where they met with dance 'guru' Ah Fai and the story did not end very well. Looking forward for the sequel of the story in the next speech perhaps with more than 'break dance' move ya.. ;P

Table topics

In line with the theme, three 'brave souls' for the table topics session volunteered to test their impromptu speech. They were TM Nor Hisham Bajuri, TM Survinne a.k.a Junjun, and first time attempt TM Norizal Faizal the most brave soul of the day. The session went well although one of the speaker did select the topic twice!

As usual, the awards were given to the best speaker, evaluator and table topic player. Toastmasters who received certificates are:
